Five Sounds You Shouldn’t Ignore

The distinction between the standard sounds your car makes and the more concerning noises can often be slight, hence the importance of keeping your ears open. Similar to how you wouldn’t disregard a human’s plea for help, you mustn’t disregard your car when it’s trying to tell you something isn’t right. By trying to understand what’s causing it distress, you can then take actions to help.

Squealing / Chirping

High-frequency squeals are more than a consistent nuisance to the driver – they could also signify a loose or worn-out belt. If you hear such noises coming from the engine, chances are high that your serpentine belt – which controls your alternator, power steering pump, and water pump – is to blame. In this case, schedule a service appointment immediately, as a faulty belt can lead to overheating, loss of power steering – and a frightening repair bill.

First, however, make sure that the squealing isn’t originating from your brakes. Manufacturers purposely insert a small metal piece in your brake pads, producing a squealing sound to warn you that your brake pads are wearing thin. Checking your brakes pads’ condition is vital, but exchanging brake pads is far more routine (and cheaper) than replacing your serpentine belt.

Knocking / Tapping / Pinging

It’s not a person trapped under your hood (hopefully). A soft thudding or ticking sound coming from the engine could indicate a problem with the engine bearings. These bearings uphold the engine’s rotating parts – and they’re pretty vocal when they’re failing.

Rattling / Clanking

Hearing something clanking around in your engine is one of the most immediately concerning car noises. It’s a warning that something – possibly something vital to your safety – has become dislodged. If you’ve looked under your hood and are unsure about what’s missing or out of place, get a specialist’s eyes on it.

A mild rattling or deep roar could be a more urgent alert, as it usually signifies a failing catalytic converter. Unfortunately, the only solution in this situation is to entirely replace the converter. Stick to a regular maintenance routine, and hopefully, you won’t face this issue.

Whooshing / Hissing

Typically, these sounds are produced by a leak in the exhaust system. If disregarded, this leak can reduce both engine performance and fuel economy. The leak could be coming from multiple places: perforations in the muffler, catalytic converter, or exhaust manifold are all potential leak origins. Fortunately, you can order every part you need to restore balance to your vehicle and get it running smoothly again.

Continuous hissing could also be due to a coolant leak or overheating of the vehicle’s cooling system. If you believe your car is overheating, stop and park in a safe spot immediately – for your own wellbeing and that of your engine.

Transmission Grinding

Constant grinding sounds often stem from transmission issues and are most observable when shifting or changing gears. (Automatic transmissions generate a jerking and shaking motion instead of a grinding noise.) Be mindful of other signs of a defective transmission, like leaking fluid, a burnt smell, or a drop in power.
